More than 30,000,000 people in the US and 200 million worldwide have a Thyroid Disorder Most affected are women. Some estimates are over 50 million in US and over 200 million worldwide, and growing.

Estimates vary widely as most patients are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed because doctors don't know what they are looking for.

Thyroid disease is also an autoimmune disease. This means that over 27 million people have one or more of the over 105 known autoimmune diseases.

Why I’m Living in a Bed & Breakfast in Colorado Springs, CO

otgh me and dave asleep on table

If you’ve wondered where I’ve been for months… here I am! Nothing like working 24/7/365 to make you look at a calendar (and a blog) and wonder what happened to the past few days, weeks, months!

Dave, my brother, and I are the proud new Innkeepers and owners of the Old Town Guesthouse, B&B and Conference Center in Old Colorado City, (first city in the state in late 1800’s) Colorado Springs, CO. Whew! As you can see by the photo above we were exhausted by mid-July after just six weeks – a non-stop, B&B bootcamp, don’t breathe, keep moving six weeks! I still have days when I just want to sleep all day to “catch up!” (You might notice a gift basket on the table between us. One of the couple who stayed with us over the 4th sent it to us. We enjoyed them so much.)

Keeping up with my blogs and website, speaking and marketing myself and coaching others, while running a B&B and managing housekeepers, and, and, and… means I’d better take care of my thyroid health!! We walked in late May for a few days training by the now previous owners and took over June 3rd and haven’t stopped moving since. In fact, I lost 14 lbs the first two months because all I was doing was “moving” and running up and down our lovely staircase a gzillion times a day! (Visit our Facebook page and see more photos of our lovely painted garden staircase! One photo above.)

My brother, Dave, and I decided a few years ago that we were going to try something we’d each been thinking about for decades. He spent years in the big hotels industry and in marketing them and more. He loves cooking and decorating (gets to use his Art History degree!) and always wanted to run a B&B. I, on the other hand, as a speaker, coach and Social Worker, have looked at many retreat center properties over the years. So, when we looked at B&B properties, in three different states, a conference center was always a must first, then the rooms.

So, here we are! . . .

Oh, and Dave knew he’d have to have back surgery soon after we arrived, which he did September 2nd. He’s still using a cane and I had to take over cooking and serving breakfast too since then. Hmmm. How did that happen?? Hopefully he’ll heal up over the next few months before high season starts again late April!

I have to say that I’ve gone through a roller coaster of physical and mental exhaustion since we got here which is not good on thyroid function, but thank goodness it is low season for a while so I can sleep in some mornings while not making breakfast and attending to guests and getting a little break. I have to work at eating for my best health too each day. My thyroid practitioner, Dr. Jared Allomong* told me, after my first two months here, that I needed more protein and gave me some bovine smoothie powder to help since I really wasn’t eating that well being so “on call” all the time.

I’m so happy to be able to share our cool new journey with you as I continue doing my usual work too – thyroid health advocate education and coaching, speaking, teaching, writing and “Dr. DeCluttering” far and wide! Come play and stay with us this year! I am offering programs here as well as private coaching retreats. Make sure you’re signed up to receive my newsletter (see opt in box to right) to find out about my programs.

Here is our new video – this is the long version as we are awaiting the short edits soon:

* If you don’t have a thyroid trained doctor, check my list here or contact Dr. Allomong’s office to see how he might work with you even if it’s long distance.
