Two glands located one on top of each kidney are of importance, right up there with our lungs or liver! We are very abusive to them, weaken them, on a daily basis in two ways, which I’ll explain in a bit. But first, did you know, that weak adrenal glands can cause a thyroid or autoimmune thyroid condition?
Does your doctor, your endocrinologist know this? Probably not, or you’d be way past back to healthy by now and not reading this!
Most doctors just focus on the thyroid gland itself rather than trying to get to the underlying cause of the disorder. Due to this grand mistake, they focus on “symptoms” and so, almost always recommend lifetime “symptom management.” BUZZ! WRONG!
WHY POOR ADRENAL HEALTH IS RAMPANT IN OUR WORLD
Two reasons (over which we have complete control!):
1) Refined foods and sugars. Being the consumers that we are, we “consume” so much, too much, refined foods and sugars on a consistent basis, starving our biology, crippling our systems and attacking and weakening our thyroids.
2) Then, there’s chronic stress.
Did you know that The World Health Organization estimates that by the year 2020, psychological and stress-related disorders, including depression, will be the 2nd leading cause of disabilities in the world.
Both our deficient diet and chronic stress have an effect on the hormone cortisol, which is secreted by the adrenal glands.
ADRENALS, EMPTY FOOD AND CORTISOL – THE PERFECT STORM
When we eat refined foods and sugars often it causes the adrenal glands to constantly secrete cortisol, which will not only affect one’s gastrointestinal health (can you say gas?), but these same uncontrolled, poor eating habits will affect the adrenal glands and adrenal health.
We all have stress and stressors in our lives, that’s part of being alive. There are however two kinds of stress – negative and positive. We need positive stress, or “challenges” and “change” to move us along in life. Negative stressors are things that “happen to us” and where we feel out of control. It’s all in how we deal with these stressors that creates chronic stress and what makes our adrenal glands secrete unhealthy levels of cortisol.
WHAT IS CORTISOL?
The short version here: Cortisol, a glucocorticoid (steroid hormone), is produced from cholesterol in the two adrenal glands. It is normally released in response to events and circumstances such as waking up in the morning, exercising, and acute stress. It regulates energy by selecting the right type and amount of substrate (carbohydrate, fat, or protein) the body needs to meet the physiological demands placed on it. When chronically elevated, cortisol can have harmful effects on weight, immune function, and chronic disease risk, i.e. thyroid health.
Cortisol (along with its partner epinephrine) is best known for its involvement in the “fight-or-flight” response and temporary increase in energy production, at the expense of processes that are not required for immediate survival. The resulting biochemical and hormonal imbalances (ideally) resolve due to a hormonally driven negative feedback loop.
“Chronic stress” is a problem because cortisol’s job is to prepare the body for a fight-or-flight response by flooding it with glucose, supplying an immediate energy source to large muscles. When there really are no issues from which to “fight or flee” (in our modern society it’s mostly in our mind, not ‘real’), we are overtaxing a natural, life saving system in our bodies to become self-attacking.
To gain your health back you must make it priority to let go and relax, let go and let be, no matter what sometimes.
WAYS TO KEEP YOUR ADRENAL GLANDS HEALTHY
1. Follow a clean, thyroid health diet. Get sugar, simple carbs and refined foods out of your meal plans. It’s not easy at first because our bodies and brains are literally “addicted” to these unnatural non-foods and chemicals. A few weeks on a clean diet will make you feel new again!
If you don’t know what to eat, you can find the complete clean diet in my manual Get Your Life Back! here. Get it, start it right now and watch your symptoms fall away.
2. Choose to let go of what you define as “stressful.” Do you know the serenity prayer? Good tool to keep in your thyroid health med bag! Here it is if you’ve forgotten its simple reminders:
Letting go is not easy, but necessary for your health and wellness when stress triggers keep pounding away at your adrenal glands, weakening your thyroid function and making you ill.
Iron rich foods can help balance your adrenals too. See here.
3. Find a “thyroid trained practitioner” ASAP who will help you immediately. If you don’t know of one in your area, check my list here.
