More than 30,000,000 people in the US and 200 million worldwide have a Thyroid Disorder Most affected are women. Some estimates are over 50 million in US and over 200 million worldwide, and growing.

Estimates vary widely as most patients are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed because doctors don't know what they are looking for.

Thyroid disease is also an autoimmune disease. This means that over 27 million people have one or more of the over 105 known autoimmune diseases.

It’s Not Just Your Thyroid Gland That is Your Thyroid Problem: PART 1 of 4

doctor with stethoscope

When you go to a regular doctor, or even an endocrinologist, they may focus on your thyroid gland as “the problem” when your symptoms and lab results show a thyroid problem. But, that’s just one of the problems!

There are four areas of the body that must be attended to in order to heal your thyroid or autoimmune thyroid condition and to restore your health besides just the thyroid gland. In other words, directly focusing on the thyroid gland itself, which is what most endocrinologists do, usually won’t restore your health back to normal.

Your thyroid condition is a big puzzle! All pieces must be put back into place.

Your thyroid condition is a big puzzle! All pieces must be put back into place.

Area #1. Digestion System

This means the entire gastrointestinal tract. To maintain the health of every cell and tissue in our body we need to consume the proper nutrients and minerals, and then digest and absorb them. Now, with that in mind, think about the eating habits of most people. Terrible, right?! No surprise that most people are in a poor state of health.

As Gary Null stated in one of his great PBS program on health and diet years ago, “You can be 80% unhealthy before a “disease” shows up.” That’s just the problem, it usually takes many years for “a health problem, or crisis” to show up from such poor eating habits, so person can eat poorly, no, terribly!, for decades before they become symptomatic.

“You can be 80% unhealthy before a “disease” shows up.” – Gary Null,  Ph.D, internationally renowned expert in the field of health and nutrition.

Your digestive issues are warning signs, like the little light on your car dashboard telling you, warning you, that your engine has a problem that could and will eventually stop your car in its tracks! So with humans. Those constant digestive pains – gas problems, “bubbling up” issues, heart burn, constipation, etc. are not triggers to run out and buy over-the-counter-television-exploiting-medications to make them temporarily go away (Thank you, Larry the Cable Guy!!) … they are clear signals to stop doing what is causing the problem in the first place!

My brother, Dave, and I bought the Old Town Guesthouse B&B and Conference Center a few months ago. (Yes, I needed a few more “hats!”) One of the housekeepers at that time stated that we were out of antacids, that she had a bubbly stomach. I had thrown them out a week before and did not restock them. It is not my responsibility to support others bad eating habits and neglect of their health, or support those drug and medicine companies for the same. Right?!!

Ongoing poor nutrition and lack of self care can easily lead to intestinal permeability, known as a leaky gut. Leaky gut happens when there is damage to the tight junctions which hold the cells of the small intestine close together. This results in larger proteins and other molecules passing through and entering the blood stream. Since the immune system sees these food products as being foreign it will mount an immune system attack – doing it’s job to protect us – and this in turn can trigger an autoimmune response – hurting us to the point of death – leading to conditions such as Graves’ Disease and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.
