THYROID DISEASE IS KILLING US

More than 30,000,000 people in the US and 200 million worldwide have a Thyroid Disorder Most affected are women. Some estimates are over 50 million in US and over 200 million worldwide, and growing.

Estimates vary widely as most patients are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed because doctors don't know what they are looking for.

Thyroid disease is also an autoimmune disease. This means that over 27 million people have one or more of the over 105 known autoimmune diseases.

Thyroid Diet – What You’re Eating May Have Carrageenan, Linked To Digestive Diseases

Thyroid health is our main focus every day with a thyroid condition affecting our well-being every moment. When it comes to our diet we need to be very aware of the foods we eat in order not to support auto-immune and other problems that will disable us more.

ONE MORE FOOD ADDITIVE THAT’S CAUSING PROBLEMS

The newest new troublesome issue (it’s always something!) is an additive in our foods called carrageenan, pronounced car·ra·geen·an or  car·ra·geen·in. In manufacturing, carrageenan derived from sea weed and red algae is used as a binder, thickening agent, and as a stabilizer in medications, foods, and toothpaste, to name a few. Carrageenan is also an ingredient in weight loss products.

RESEARCH: NEGATIVE AFFECTS OF CARRAGEENAN

Dr. Tobacman, author of 18 peer-reviewed studies on the biological effects of carrageenan, has shown ingesting foods containing carrageenan can cause inflammation, one of the most important things we need to stop in our bodies. In fact, drug developers used to administer carrageenan to cause tissue inflammation when testing the anti-inflammatory properties of new products.

As I’ve studied this issue, I’ve found out that this is in fact not such a new issue. Come to find out, whistle blowers on carrageenan have been trying to stop it for years. Dr. Andrew Weil has cautioned against the consumption of carrageenan for over a decade. “All forms of carrageenan side effects are capable of causing inflammation.” Inflammation is “a root cause” of a number of serious illnesses, and most all disease.

CARRAGEENAN AFFECTING MORE PEOPLE

According to some studies, rates of digestive diseases are rising—ranging from widespread digestive discomfort  – belly bloat, spastic colon, Irritable Bowel Syndrome—to serious and sometimes life-threatening diseases such as ulcerative colitis and colon cancer.

For decades, scientists conducting laboratory animal experiments using the common food additive carrageenan have found higher rates of gastrointestinal inflammation, colitis-like disease, and even colon cancer.

WHERE YOU WILL FIND CARRAGEENAN

Carrageenan can be found in many foods, even foods labeled “natural” and “organic.”

It is widely used in

  • dairy products
  • chocolate milk
  • whipping cream
  • ice cream
  • nonfat sour cream
  • yogurt
  • frozen dinners
  • prepared poultry and cold cuts
  • nutritional drinks
  • and even infant formula

The foods that are most troublesome for us are alternative milk products:

  • soy milk (but, don’t drink soy anyway)
  • coconut milk
  • and almond milk

READ THE LABEL

Always read the label. If you read carrageenan see if there is another option. I’ve found several almond milks without it now, one at SPROUTS grocery and another off brand. Unfortunately, they are not organic.

YOU HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR FOOD CHOICES

Don’t depend on the FDA to do it.  In June 2012 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejected a citizen petition by the nation’s preeminent publicly funded scientist and carrageenan expert, who formally requested that carrageenan be removed from our food supply.

Make your voice heard. Tell your grocery store to stop stocking their shelves with known problem foods and find non-carrageenan ones.

  • I am down to about a dozen foods I can eat now ~ mostly due to giving up my gall bladder 21 years ago. I thought I was doing okay this past year with lactose/gluten free ice cream. But today tried vanilla and had problems ~ carrageenan!! The chocolate has it as well, but doesn’t cause the digestive woes that the vanilla does. Not sure if there is less carrageenan in the chocolate or what. Well, it was a treat for a year!
